Gross federal debt rose about $7.8 trillion across the first term
The 2016 campaign promised to eliminate the federal debt over eight years. Per the Treasury Department's Debt to the Penny series, total public debt outstanding was $19,947,304,555,212.49 on January 20, 2017 and $27,751,896,236,414.77 on January 20, 2021, an increase of $7,804,591,681,202.28 across the four-year term. Context
The promise was framed as elimination over eight years and only one term was served, so the eight-year horizon was never reached; the figures above cover four years. Roughly the final year of the term coincided with pandemic relief spending enacted with bipartisan majorities in Congress, which accounts for a large share of the increase, and federal debt is a product of appropriations rather than executive action alone. A few secondary sources give the January 2017 figure as about $20.24 trillion; that figure conflicts with the Treasury series and the primary Treasury figure is used here.
