Trump declares the ceasefire with Iran over after July 2026 exchange of strikes
A ceasefire between the United States and Iran, announced April 7 to 8, 2026 and formalized in the 14-point Islamabad Memorandum of June 17, 2026, collapsed in July 2026. On July 7, Iran struck three commercial vessels, United States Central Command struck more than 80 targets in Iran, and Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps attacked United States military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait. On July 8, at the NATO summit in Ankara, Trump said of the ceasefire, I think it's over. On July 10 he posted on Truth Social that the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER.
Context
The United States was a direct belligerent in the conflict, which began February 28, 2026 with the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei by Israel with United States intelligence assistance, and the ceasefire that collapsed was an agreement the United States itself signed. Iran's strikes on commercial vessels on June 25 and July 7 were the proximate cause of each breakdown as reported.
