Statistics Canada reports 29.1 million Canadian trips to the United States in 2025, down 25.4 percent
In a release dated February 23, 2026, Statistics Canada reported that Canadian residents made 29.1 million trips to the United States in 2025, a decrease of 25.4 percent from 2024 and 66.4 percent of the 2019 level. In December 2025 alone, Canadian residents returned from 2.2 million trips to the United States, down 25.0 percent year over year, with automobile trips down 30.2 percent and air trips down 11.0 percent. The decline followed tariffs imposed on Canadian goods and statements by Trump about annexing Canada, beginning in February 2025.
Context
Travel volume is a measured quantity and this entry reports it without attributing a motive to any traveller. The decline is not connected to the January 2026 Greenland tariff threat: the Canadian consumer response began in February 2025, roughly eleven months earlier, in reaction to tariffs on Canadian goods and to statements about annexation, and treating it as a response to the Greenland episode would reverse the chronology. Cross-border travel responds to exchange rates, fuel prices, and border processing as well as to political conditions, and this entry does not isolate a cause.
