Ceasefire between India and Pakistan announced on Truth Social; violations follow the same evening and India denies mediation
On May 10, 2025, at 11:55 Universal Time, which is 17:25 Indian Standard Time, Trump posted: After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. India's Ministry of External Affairs stated that the two Directors General of Military Operations had agreed by telephone that both sides would stop all firing and military action with effect from 1700 hours Indian Standard Time, twenty-five minutes before the post. Later the same evening the Foreign Secretary stated that there had been repeated violations of the understanding. Organised hostilities have not resumed since.
Context
Credit for this arrangement is disputed on the record and this entry does not resolve it. Trump said in Riyadh on May 13, 2025 that his administration brokered the ceasefire and that he used trade to a large extent to do it. India denies both mediation and any trade linkage in three government documents: the External Affairs Minister told the Lok Sabha on July 28, 2025 that at no stage, in any conversation with the United States, was there any linkage with trade, and that India's standing position was there will be no mediation, anything between us and Pakistan is bilateral; a Rajya Sabha answer of January 29, 2026 states that the understanding was arrived at directly between the two Directors General of Military Operations. Pakistan welcomed the United States role. A wording point that matters: no Indian government document read at intake uses the word ceasefire, using understanding and cessation of firing instead, so the word in this entry's title is the announcement's word rather than India's. This entry is marked verified_modified because two claims in circulation could not be established at intake and are not published: that the announcement preceded confirmation by either government, which no timed source supports and which the 1700 hours effective time cuts against, and that Amritsar was among the cities where violations occurred, which appears in no source read. Verified violation locations are Srinagar, Jammu, and Baramulla. The August 2026 status is stated as organised hostilities not resumed rather than as holding, because no source located states the latter in terms; the Indus Waters Treaty remains in abeyance and relations remain degraded.
Response on the record
India's Ministry of External Affairs stated on May 10, 2025 that there had been repeated violations of the understanding arrived at earlier that evening and called upon Pakistan to address them. Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said it remained committed to a faithful implementation of the ceasefire and that, notwithstanding violations it attributed to India, its forces were handling the situation with responsibility and restraint.
